The Solo Attorney’s First 20 Clients: A 90-Day Referral and Local Search Plan

A 90-day plan for US solo attorneys to sign their first 20 clients through referrals, Google Business Profile and fast intake, within Rules 7.1 to 7.3.

Global Growth Playbooks · Part 1 · United States

The answer

A new US solo practice gets its first 20 clients from people who already trust the lawyer, not from ads. Spend the first 90 days on three assets in this order: a written referral ask to 150 named contacts, a complete Google Business Profile with steady reviews, and an intake process that answers every inquiry within five minutes during business hours.

Why referrals and local search come first

Paid search for legal keywords is priced for firms with established intake teams and conversion data. A solo without either pays the same click price but converts fewer of those clicks, so the effective cost per signed client is far higher. Referrals and local search, by contrast, cost time rather than cash, and both compound: every signed client becomes a review and a potential referral source.

The constraint is that both channels only work if the lawyer is specific. A referral partner cannot send work to someone who “does a bit of everything”, and Google’s local results reward a profile whose primary category and services match what people actually search for.

The 90-day plan

Weeks Focus Output
1 to 2 Contact list 150 named people: former colleagues, classmates, lawyers in non-competing practice areas, accountants, financial planners, realtors
2 to 4 Referral ask A short personal note to each contact naming the exact matter type you take and one sentence on who is a good fit
3 to 6 Google Business Profile Verified profile, correct primary category, services listed, photos, hours, and a review request built into matter closing
4 to 12 Referral meetings Two coffees or calls per week with the 20 contacts most likely to see your matter type
Ongoing Intake Every inquiry answered within five minutes in business hours, consultations booked on the first call

The referral note

Keep it under 120 words and make it easy to forward. Name the matter type, the client situation you handle well, and how to reach you. Do not offer anything of value in exchange for referrals; Rule 7.2(b) limits what a lawyer may give for a recommendation, with narrow exceptions such as a reciprocal referral arrangement that is non-exclusive and disclosed to the client.

Running the profile

  1. Choose the primary category that matches your main practice (for example, Estate planning attorney rather than Lawyer).
  2. List services in plain language that clients use, not statute names.
  3. Ask every satisfied client for a review at closing, by text, with a direct link. Never offer anything in return and never write reviews for clients.
  4. Reply to every review within two business days without disclosing confidential information.
  5. Post one update a month that answers a common question in your practice area.

Guardrails

  • Rule 7.1: no statements that create unjustified expectations, including in review replies.
  • Rule 7.3: live person-to-person solicitation of prospective clients for pecuniary gain is limited; referral sources and existing contacts are fine, strangers in distress are not.
  • Google prohibits incentivized reviews and requires the profile to represent a real business location or service area.
  • Your state’s version of the rules controls. Check your state bar’s advertising rules before launching any paid channel.

What to measure

  • Referral notes sent and referral meetings held per week.
  • Inquiries by source (referral, Google profile, other).
  • Inquiry-to-consultation and consultation-to-signed rates.
  • Reviews received per month.

30-day checklist

  • Build the 150-name contact list
  • Send the first 50 referral notes
  • Verify and complete the Google Business Profile
  • Add a review request to matter closing
  • Set a five-minute response standard and test it with a mystery call
