When to start paid advertising. A step-by-step playbook for law firms, with scripts, guardrails and a 30-day checklist.

The answer
Build a visible organic presence before scaling paid ads. Prospects who have already seen the firm’s content need far fewer ad exposures to act, so the same budget buys more consultations. When you do run ads, use stark, specific creative that names exactly who it is for.
Why organic comes first
Paid campaigns cost far less per lead once prospects already know your name. A prospect who has seen your content needs one or two ad exposures; a cold prospect needs many more. Build organic content and referral outreach first, then scale paid campaigns once there is an audience and proof to retarget.
When you do run ads, keep the creative plain. With platform algorithms now handling much of the targeting, the creative does the targeting. The best performers I see are static: a black background, white text, and one sentence naming the exact buyer and outcome, for example, “If you run a three-attorney estate planning practice and your calendar has gaps, we fill it with consultations from families who have already read your guide.”
Why do law firm ad costs keep rising? Because legal keywords and audiences are among the most competitive in paid media, and firms compete on budget alone. Why does organic help? Because a prospect who recognizes the attorney’s face and has watched a few videos already trusts the firm, so one ad is enough. The root cause of high cost per case is often low familiarity, not poor targeting.
Sequencing for a law firm
| Phase | Focus | Paid spend |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Foundation (months 1 to 3) | Specific offer, single-concept content, Google Business Profile, five-minute intake | Small retargeting budget only (people who visited the site or watched videos) |
| 2. Proof (months 3 to 6) | Content consistency, reviews, borrowed audiences, referral outbound | Retargeting plus small tests of specific static ads |
| 3. Scale (month 6 onward) | Expand winning formats | Increase spend on proven creative; keep organic running |
Google Search and Local Services Ads capture people actively searching and can run from phase 1 for urgent practice areas; the principle still holds that organic familiarity improves their conversion.
Writing the stark static ad
Formula: If you’re [specific person] [specific situation], we [specific thing].
Examples:
- “If you were hurt in a truck crash in Harris County and the trucking company’s insurer is already calling, talk to us before you talk to them.”
- “If you’re an Ohio employer with 50 to 300 staff and just received a wage claim, we’ll give you a fixed-fee assessment in five business days.”
- “If you have young children and no will in Florida, we’ll name their guardian and finish your plan in 21 days.”
Black or brand-dark background, white text, firm name and required disclaimers. Test three to five versions; keep the winner and test new specifics against it.
Guardrails
- Ads are advertising under Rules 7.1 and 7.2; include the responsible attorney or firm name and any state-required disclaimers.
- Some states require filing or retaining copies of ads.
- Do not imply outcomes, “specialization” or urgency that is not real.
- Targeting by sensitive characteristics is restricted by platforms and may raise ethics issues; target by situation and geography.
What to measure
- Cost per lead and cost per signed case, by phase.
- Share of paid leads who had previously engaged with organic content.
- Consultation-to-signed rate for paid leads versus organic leads.
30-day checklist
- Confirm phase 1 foundations are in place
- Set up retargeting audiences from site and video viewers
- Write five stark static ads using the formula
- Clear them with ethics counsel
- Run a small test and record cost per signed case
