AI Search Visibility Across Four Markets: Getting Cited by ChatGPT and Google AI

How law firms and B2B businesses in the US, UK, Australia and Canada become the source AI assistants cite: crawl access, plain answers and entity signals.

Global Growth Playbooks · Part 26 · US · UK · Australia · Canada

The answer

AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google’s AI features and Copilot increasingly answer questions before anyone clicks. Firms become the cited source by allowing the relevant crawlers, publishing plain, jurisdiction-specific answers, keeping business information consistent across the web and earning mentions on sites the assistants already trust.

How citation happens

Google states that pages need to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search to be shown as a supporting link in its AI features, and that the same SEO fundamentals apply. OpenAI publishes the user agents it uses, including the crawler that supports search features in ChatGPT, which site owners can allow or block in robots.txt. If those crawlers cannot reach a page, it cannot be cited.

The four layers

Layer What to do Market note
Access Allow search crawlers in robots.txt; make sure pages render without heavy scripts Same in all markets
Answers One page per question, with the answer in the first two sentences Use local terms: attorney, solicitor, lawyer; state, province or territory
Entity Consistent name, address, phone and profiles across directories Use local directories in each market
Authority Mentions and links from respected publications and associations Local bar, law society and trade bodies

Weekly routine

  1. Pick five questions your buyers ask.
  2. Ask each AI assistant those questions and record who is cited.
  3. Improve or publish the page that should answer each one.
  4. Pursue one mention on a site that is cited.
  5. Repeat monthly and track changes.

Guardrails

  • Never publish inaccurate legal information to chase citations.
  • Follow your regulator’s advertising rules in AI-facing content too.
  • Be cautious with claims about rankings or guaranteed visibility.

What to measure

  • Share of your target questions where you are cited.
  • Traffic and inquiries from AI referrals.
  • Branded search volume.

30-day checklist

  • Check robots.txt for search crawler access
  • List 20 buyer questions
  • Run a baseline citation check
  • Rewrite five pages with the answer first
  • Secure one authoritative mention
